Three Proud Doggett Winners
As I have written about the Doggett Coat and Badge Race recently, Tim Koch of London has sent me a wonderful photograph of three old Doggett winners: J.J. Turferry (winner in 1900), W. H. Campbell (1850), and A.H. Brewer (1901). I love how Mr. Campbell holds his pose. I wonder where he got all those medals from…

A fabulous picture!
ReplyDeleteIf Campbell won in 1850, he would have been about 70 when the picture was taken. The Crimean War was very shortly after he won the race, from 1853 to 1856, and there were few opportunities to earn a chestful of medals like that until the Boer War.
PS there is a drawing of Campbell winning here - http://thames.me.uk/s00049L.htm
