Naked Rowers Calendars 2013

Time has come to look for a calendar for 2013. Surfing the web, I have not found a rowing calendar with naked rowers from Leander Club this year, nor has the U.S. Women's Rowing Team, or the Canadian Women's Rowing Team put out a calendar (neither of them were really naked...!). I guess, they don't need any money in between Olympic Games. However, University of Warwick Boat Club is doing its annual fund-raising, so for the forth consecutive year, the men have published a calendar with naked butt and other naked parts of the rowing body. They are joined - however, not in the same pictures or even the same calendar - by the club's women, who have a calendar of their own.

Decency allows us only to publish a picture of the club flag (above), but you can order both the calendars and a DVD on how the calendar was made (not the printing process, but behind the scenes of the photo shoot), here.

Power & Grace - US Women's Calendar 2012

So, it’s almost Christmas and almost a new year. It might be too late to ask Santa for this calendar for next year, but it’s not too late for you to order your own copy. HTBS wrote about this calendar, “2012 Power & Grace US Women’s Rowing Team Calendar”, already on 26 September, but as US rowing team member Megan Kalmoe now has uploaded a video how the calendar was made, and how the women are training (and sleeping!) HTBS decided to give it another push before Christmas (and we would very much like to help the US female rowers…)

The Hottest Of The Hot!

The Swede Lassi Karonen, the hottest of them all?

Two day ago, Megan Kalmoe, member of the US National Team, who earlier this year took a silver medal in the coxed quadruple sculls at the World Championships in Bled, posted her list of the “Top 20 Hottest Male Rowing Athletes of 2011” on her blog (and it comes with a video!). I do not have any comments about this more than I am happy to see that a Swede made her list. Lassi Karonen is No. 1, but I do not really know if this means that he is on top of the list of these twenty ‘hotties’, or if there is no special ranking between these athletes.

In the name of equality, dare I ask that someone out there do a list of the 2011 Hottest Female Rowers in the World? While I have some suggestions whom I think should be on that list, I am not going there… I guess I am just too old for things like that. Instead, I hand over the idea to a younger man, who might get away with it (on the other hand, he might not!).

I did, however, earlier post something about the US Rowing Women Team’s Calendar, but that was not really because they were 'semi-nude', it was only to help them to sell more calendars to raise funds for their training. Here is a video showing how the calendar was shot:

Another View Of ‘Power & Grace’

Yesterday’s HTBS item on ‘Power & Grace - The 2012 US Women’s Rowing Team’s Calendar’ was thought provoking. I always feel mildly uncomfortable when serious female athletes allow their images to be used in an arguably ‘sexual’ manner. Male athletes pose in such ways as well but, in our unequal society, they are not taken less seriously when they do it (see ‘Nude Men of Leander’). Perhaps it is a matter of degree, the difference between admiring an athletic form, which I think is acceptable, and the thinking of someone like Sepp Blatter, the President of the International Soccer Federation, who, in 2004, suggested that female soccer players should “wear tighter shorts and low cut shirts...” The HTBS item on a painting of a ‘topless’ female rower produced some interesting comments. While we are on the subject of sexism, below is a picture of the cover of Rowing magazine from December 1960. The image is fine, but the text......

“2012 Power & Grace” - US Women’s Rowing Team’s Calendar

It’s time to think about next year! Well, that is buying a calendar for 2012. Just like last year (being a calendar for this year), the US National Women’s Rowing Team is offering a calendar to raise funds to help cover their daily training. “Training to make the Olympic rowing team is a full‐time job, requiring 45+ hours per week of dedication. The team trains thrice daily by rowing, erging, running, biking, yoga and weight lifting”, it says on TF Publishing’s website.

U.S. Women Rowing Calendar

On 5 October I wrote about the Canadian women's calendar 'We Row: The Canadian Women of Canadian Rowing' (click here to go to that entry), and now the U.S. Women are offering their calendar 'Power and Grace 2011 Portraits of American Women Rowers Fundraising Calendar'. “We Row: The Women of Canadian Rowing”

In an effort to raise money for training and living expenses, the female rowers who are aspiring to represent Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England have made a calendar. The money raised by selling this calendar will go directly to the rowers. Of course, this is not a new idea. Athletes, both men and women, in different sports have done this for many years. However, the new trick with this calendar is that the women are keeping their clothes on!

The 2011 calendar, which has the title “We Row: The Women of Canadian Rowing”, features Canada’s top female rowers. The calendar is C$20 and can be ordered by clicking here (where you also will get more information about these rowers).
