Under almost perfect racing weather, this year's Henley Royal Regatta, between 29 June and 3 July, offered some extraordinary races. No less than 33 records were broken during the five-day regatta, which led to five British victories. However, not in the Grand Challenge Cup where Molsey BC/Leander Club had to give in for the powerful German boat from Ruder Club Hansa von 1898 e.V. Dortmund. The Germans also won the Ladies' Challenge Cup when Berlin Ruderclub beat Leander A.

Upper Yarra RC, Australia, defeated Star Club in the Thames, while University of California, Berkeley won the Temple by beating Amsterdamsche Studenten, Holland. The American women, as Princeton Training Center (World and Olympic champions), were also successful in the Remenham Challenge Cup where they held off the British combination from Leander Club and Cloucester RC (British Rowing's national team). Esther Lofgren, who rowed in the American eight, also substituted in the American quadruple sculls which gave her a second Cup.

The British duo, Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed, did not have any problems to overrun the Italian pair in the Silver Goblets and Nickalls Challenge Cup. In the Diamonds, Alan Campbell easily defeated Nick Hudson of Australia. In the women's single scull, The Princess Royal Challenge Cup, the Czech sculler M. Knapkova beat the American G.L. Stone of Cambridge BC.
