The Thought Behind the Oar

It was not something
he made a meal of.
Yet depending on
where he was
in his travels,

come July 4th, December 6th, 9/11,
he would take to the water
and row,
to connect with the spirits
of those no longer of earth,

those no longer of the elements
we wrap ourselves in.
